An Athens man remains in jail Tuesday after he called 911 to report someone dressed as a Limestone County sheriff’s deputy attacked and raped his mother while he watched, an official said.

Limestone County Sheriff’s Public Information Officer Stephen Young said 40-year-old Barry Wayne McKinney called 911 to report a deputy had come to his mother’s house and assaulted her. McKinney then called 911 again to say paramedics should check his mother for injuries when they arrived.

However, Young said, first responders couldn’t find the house when they arrived to the 22000 block of Looney Road, where McKinney said he and his mother lived. After an attempt by dispatch to reach McKinney failed, an SUV pulled up to the scene and McKinney exited the vehicle.

Young said McKinney approached the porch of the house and explained someone dressed as a Limestone County sheriff’s deputy, and who identified himself as such, had attacked his mother. At this point, Young said, McKinney began to change his story.

First, McKinney told deputies he had witnessed the assault, which he said occurred inside his mother’s home, from inside his own home. He also told deputies the assault was actually a rape and that he had photos of the crime occurring.

He then changed his story to say the person had attacked and raped his mother in the yard between their homes. When deputies knocked on the door of the mother’s home, a woman in pajamas answered.

McKinney told her he had called 911 like she asked, but the woman said she never asked him to call. When deputies asked the woman if she had been assaulted, Young said the woman replied, “No, I’ve been asleep.”

Young said no photos or other evidence of the alleged attack were ever provided to deputies. McKinney was arrested and charged with one count making a false report to law enforcement and one count rendering false alarm.

He remained Tuesday in the Limestone County Jail with bail set at $2,000.

McKinney was previously arrested Friday on warrants following grand jury indictments for drug trafficking, fourth-degree receiving stolen property and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was released on a $52,000 bond, but a motion to revoke the bond was filed Tuesday.
