Organizers of the upcoming Dan Williams blood drive say “it’s not about the needle; it’s about the need.”

The City of Athens Relay for Life Dan Williams Memorial Blood Drive is set for 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday at Athens City Hall, 200 W. Hobbs St. The drive is part of Paint the Town Purple Week in Athens.

City of Athens Relay for Life team captain Holly Hollman said the team holds the blood drive in memory of longtime Athens Mayor Dan Williams, affectionately known as “Mayor Dan,” who died in 2015. Williams was diagnosed with leukemia while serving as a state representative and had to have blood transfusions during his treatment, Hollman said.

He fought a tough fight,” she said.

The memorial blood drive started in 2016.

One pint of blood can save up to three lives, according to the American Red Cross Blood Services.

Donors will receive a free gift and cholesterol screening. They must be at least 16 years old and weigh at least 110 pounds. Those age 16 also need written parental consent. All donors need to bring photo identification.

Organizers said donors should drink plenty of water prior to making a donation.
