East Limestone had a great offensive and defensive game Friday night, and took a dominant victory over Madison Academy in the opening round of the Class 4A-5A boys soccer state playoffs.
East Limestone’s defense, led by central defenders Joel Russ and Dylan Irvin, held Madison Academy to just four total shots in the game, which goalkeeper Parker Moran was able to save.
Meanwhile, East Limestone hurt Madison Academy on set piece, scoring its first two goals from corner kicks and its third from a penalty kick.
After the first 31 minutes went by without a score, East scored two in quick succession, both off corner kicks. Cody Tiemann delivered the kick in the 32nd minute, which Daven Sellers put in the back of the net to open the scoring.
Four minutes later, it was almost an exact repeat, with Tiemann delivering the corner kick into the penalty area. This time, it was Jason Degroff there to score, which gave the Indians a 2-0 halftime lead.
East’s third goal came in the 63rd minute on a penalty kick after Madison Academy committed a foul in the penalty area. Degroff made no mistake on the penalty, slamming it home to put the Indians up 3-0.
The fourth goal came three minutes later, as James Oliver blasted a 25-yard shot past the Madison Academy goalkeeper to put the game on ice.
East got its final goal in the last minute of the game, as Michael Miller scored off an assist from Syrus James.
East Limestone will face St. John Paul II in the second round of the playoffs. The Indians will host the Falcons at 7 p.m. today. St. John Paul II advanced to the second round by defeating Ardmore 3-0 last Thursday.
In other first-round games involving local teams, the Elkmont girls were defeated by Madison Academy 13-3 in the first round of the Class 4A-5A playoffs Thursday, and the Athens High girls fell 4-1 to Buckhorn in the first round of the Class 6A playoffs Friday night.
