Greenbrier Baptist Church will host fisherman Clay Dyer at 6 p.m. Saturday, May 4, at the church at 7939 Greenbrier Road, Madison. Dyer is a professional bass fisherman born without lower limbs or a left arm and with a partial right arm. RODEO WEEK

Rodeo parade

The 37th Annual Rodeo Parade will begin 11 a.m. Saturday, May 11, at the Limestone Sheriff’s Rodeo Arena. There is no entry fee to join. Group and individual participants should line up at 10 a.m. Saturday at the arena. The parade, led by Limestone County Sheriff Mike Blakely and Grand Marshal Stanley McNatt, will feature Queen contestants, cowgirls and cowboys of all ages on horseback, buggies and wagons. Parade route will travel from the arena to the courthouse on Alabama 99 and Market Street, turn on Jefferson Street, then return to the arena via Elm Street.

Rodeo kickoff

Preston’s Western & Outdoor Wear will host the rodeo kickoff 5 p.m. Monday, May 13, at the store near the intersection of U.S. 72 and Interstate 65 in Athens. The free kickoff will feature horseback rides and kid-friendly activities.

Street dance/fashion show

Cast Products Inc. and #1 Bail Bonding of Limestone County will host the rodeo street dance and fashion show 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 14, at the Limestone County Courthouse Square. The event will feature the Jeff Whitlow and the Old Barn Band, line dancing and a Western fashion show.

Slack

Team roping contestants will compete during a designated slack Thursday, May 16, at the Limestone Sheriff’s Rodeo Arena on Alabama 99. Area elementary students will reward “Leader in Me” and “Reading Initiative” participants. Gates open at 8 a.m. with slack beginning at 9 a.m. Admission $5.

The rodeo for individuals with special needs is 10 a.m.–1 p.m. Friday, May 17, at the Limestone Sheriff’s Rodeo Arena on Alabama 99. This event is sponsored by Turner Beverage Company of Huntsville, Allen Brown Heating & Cooling and Limestone County Farmers Federation.

Community Action Partnership of North Alabama is accepting applications for early Head Start, preschool Head Start and state pre-K Head Start for the 2019–2020 school year. Head Start

Community Action Partnership of North Alabama is accepting applications for early Head Start, preschool Head Start and state pre-K Head Start for the 2019–2020 school year. The Head Start programs are for children 3–4 years old. Parents must provide birth certificate; verification of 2018 income in the form of a W-2 form, check stub, Social Security statement, child support, unemployment, etc.; and Medicaid or insurance card, if available. Nonperishable food drive

Lil Red Wagon Collections at 208 N. Houston St., Athens, is open 9 a.m.–7 p.m. the first week of each month to collect nonperishable food for local homeless people. Donated items will be given to Limestone County Churches Involved, which will distribute them.

 

Flex class

Spaghetti dinner

The Vietnam Veterans of America will host a spaghetti dinner the third Monday of each month through October. Dinner consists of spaghetti, cole slaw or salad, garlic bread, dessert and drink. People can either eat in or carry out. The cost of a plate is $8. Dinners will be served from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. and 5-7 p.m. at the VVA building at 17915 W. Elm St., Athens. Community Action Partnership of North Alabama is recruiting substitutes in Limestone and Madison counties. Requirements: Must be age 19 or older, hold high school diploma or GED, have medical form and tuberculosis test completed within past six months.
