- Athens Fire & Rescue battled a house fire at 600 Acorn Hill Circle. One person was taken to Vanderbilt Hospital in Nashville for treatment.
Athens firefighters rescued a grandmother Tuesday from a fire so hot it burned the first responders’ helmets, officials said.
City of Athens Communications Specialist Holly Hollman said firefighters pulled her out through a bedroom window. Also in the home were four other people, including a 4-year-old girl and a family friend. All four made it out safely, officials said.
AFR Chief Bryan Thornton said firefighters made the rescue while flames engulfed the home.
“Parts of their helmets are melted, but they were able to get into her bedroom and get her out,” Thornton said. “She received medical attention on site and was transported to Vanderbilt.”
The fire occurred around 10:25 p.m. on Acorn Hill Circle. Thornton said AFR was back on the scene this morning to continue its investigation as to the cause of the fire.
