- East Limestone pitcher Zach Pyles delivers one to the plate in a recent game against Ardmore. East will host Arab in the first round of the Class 5A playoffs at 5 p.m. today.
The high school baseball season ended Tuesday for most teams in Limestone County, but four schools get to play just a little bit longer as a reward for a good season.
Athens Bible, East Limestone, Athens High and West Limestone have all advanced to the state playoffs by either winning or finishing runner-up in their respective regions. The playoffs begin today with doubleheaders, with an if-necessary third game set for Saturday.
Athens Bible and East Limestone will host their first-round series after winning their respective area championships, while Athens and West Limestone will travel for the first round after finishing runner-up in area.
Athens Bible (18-6), the champion of Class 1A, Area 14, will host Area 13 runner-up Hackleburg (10-15) beginning at 1 p.m. The Trojans ran through area 14 with a perfect 6-0 record, winning every game except for one by at least 10 runs.
East Limestone (14-14) will host a first-round Class 5A series after winning Area 16 with a 4-2 record. The Indians have lost four out of their last five games heading into the playoffs, however, so they will hope to get back some momentum heading into the postseason.
The Indians will host Arab (19-9), the runner-up of a very competitive Area 15, beginning at 5 p.m. Arab finished 5-1 in area play, but lost out to Scottsboro for the area title by virtue of losing the tie-breaking third game of that series after the two teams split the first two games.
Athens High (22-11) will travel to take on Hazel Green in a Class 6A series beginning at 5 p.m. Athens finished second in a three-team Area 15, sweeping Columbia but losing two out of three to Muscle Shoals, including a 2-1 defeat in the deciding third game of the series.
Hazel Green (21-13) is a familiar opponent for Athens, having been in the Golden Eagles’ area the previous two years. The Trojans won a very weak Area 16 with a 5-1 record, sweeping Mae Jemison and Lee-Huntsville and winning a tie-breaking third game with area runner-up Buckhorn after the two teams split the first two games of that series.
West Limestone (10-19) will hit the road to play Wilson in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs, with the first game set for 4:30 p.m.
The Wildcats were runner-up in the three-team Area 15, finishing with a 2-2 record after sweeping Elkmont and being swept by Brooks.
Wilson (15-12) won Area 16 with a perfect 6-0 record, sweeping Central-Florence, Deshler and Rogers.
