Limestone Co. Relay for Life set for May 10

Those wanting to show their support for the American Cancer’s Society’s ongoing efforts to stamp out cancer are invited to participate in the annual Limestone County Relay for Life event.

This year’s Relay is set for 6 p.m. to midnight Friday, May 10, at the Athens Sportsplex, 270 U.S. 31 North, Athens. As of Tuesday, there were 17 teams participating. Those are:

• County for a Cure (Blake Williams, team leader; 16 members);

• TeamBlueButterflies (Deborah Chapman, team leader; 32 members);

• #unshakeableHope (Brooke Burns, team leader; eight members);

• City of Athens Relay for Life (Holly Hollman, team leader; 32 members);

• First Cumberland Presbyterian Church Women’s Team (Candy Barr, team leader; one member);

• First Cumberland Presbyterian Church Fooks’ Team (Kathy Ezell, team leader; one member);

• Kids for a Cure (Gina Yarbrough, team leader; one member);

• Cancer Crushers (Sonya Blansit, team leader; four members);

• Moo-vers and Shakers (Hedy Lou Cannon, team leader; one member);

• Davids Temple Church (Deborah McDonald, team leader; two members);

• Athens Animal Hospital (Heather Grandland, team leader; one member);

• Team PJ (Pamela Schmidt Baldo, team leader; one member);

• Redstone Piggy Bankers (Christine Waite, team leader; six members);

• Poplar Creek (Faye Shoulders, team leader; one member);

• Oak Grove CME Church (Shirley Malone, team leader; 17 members);

• Cupcakes for a Cure (Cindy Rochelle, team leader; one member); and

• Blue Springs Elementary Beta Club (Tiffany Jones, team leader; one member).

The purpose

Teams raise money from the community, which is then given to the American Cancer Society for research efforts. This year’s goal is $90,000. As of Tuesday, $25,990.49 had been raised with 31 days left in the campaign.

Event schedule

• Opening ceremony: The even is kicked off by honoring everyone who’s been affected by cancer and everyone who has contributed to the success of this year’s Relay season;

• Survivor/caregiver walk: Survivors and caregivers are honored for their strength and courage;

• Luminaria ceremony: Luminarias are lighted in an effort to recognize lives taken by cancer, survivors and those fighting the disease;

• Closing ceremony: This represents what teams and individuals have accomplished together while also uniting for work that needs to be done moving forward.
