Huntsville is the 33rd-fattest city in the United States, according to a study recently published by WalletHub. Mobile ranked fifth on the study, while the Birmingham-Hoover area was ranked 22nd.
When asked for comment, the city of Huntsville provided the following statement:
“The rankings show our country still faces serious health consequences from obesity. While Alabama ranks at the top of the national list, Huntsville has one of the lowest obesity rates among the state’s major cities. The Healthy Huntsville initiative, which promotes fitness and nutrition, will continue to shine a spotlight on the need for wellness.”
McAllen, Texas, ranked first in the study. According to WalletHub, McAllen has the highest share of obese adults, 44.90 percent, which is 2.5 times higher than in San Francisco, the metro area with the lowest at 17.85 percent.
To determine the score, WalletHub used the following metrics:
• Obesity and overweight: 60 points. This category included the subcategories of overweight and obese adults, teenagers and children;
• Health consequences: 25 points. This category included the subcategories of adults with high cholesterol, diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease and obesity-related deaths; and
• Food and fitness: 15 points. This category included the subcategories of low fruit and vegetable consumption, the share of residents who say they eat healthy, access to healthy food, physically inactive adults, city friendliness toward an active lifestyle, access to parks and recreation and number of health educators and community health workers per capita.
