Softball: Carder drives in five runs in Athens victory

Athens had standout performances at the plate and in the circle Tuesday, as the Golden Eagles defeated Lincoln County 12-0 Tuesday in the Gulf Coast Classic in Gulf Shores.

Athens scored three runs in the top of the first inning, and then added five in the second and four more in the third. Meanwhile, pitchers Deann Motquin and Morgan Stiles combined to allow only one hit in shutting out Lincoln County.

Anna Carder had two doubles and five RBIs to lead Athens at the plate. Olivia McCurry had two hits and two RBIs, while Stiles, Mary Greg Anderson and Jordyn Johnson also had two hits each for the Golden Eagles.

Calhoun splits doubleheader

Calhoun Community College split a doubleheader with Shelton State Tuesday, taking the first game 8-3 before dropping the second game by a 6-0 score.

Crystal McElhaney hit a home run to lead Calhoun in the first game, while Peyton Willcutt was 3-for-4 with two RBIs.

Caroline Parker also had two hits and drove in three runs, while Kalli Daniel had two hits for the Warhawks. McKenna Rose was the winning pitcher.

Calhoun’s bats went silent in the night cap, as they couldn’t crack the scoreboard against Shelton State.

Daniel led the Warhawks with two hits, while Mallorie Davis hit a triple in the losing effort.

Calhoun is now 11-11-1 on the season, and will travel to play Wallace State in Hanceville today.
