News outlets report 40-year-old Cecil James was arrested early Monday and charged with attempted murder and other offenses.

Captain Paul Burch of the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office says the chase started when a Prichard police officer attempted to pull James over. Investigators say James shot at the officer, who fired back. James was shot six times and was released from the hospital. No officers were hurt in the shootout.

Burch was unable to confirm why the officer initiated the traffic stop but says the vehicle James was driving had an expired tag from 2003.

It’s unclear if James has a lawyer who could comment.
