The final round of Athens leaf collection runs today, weather permitting. Leaves mixed with limbs won’t be collected. Do not block traffic lanes with leaves.

Mardi Gras block party
The Athens State University Artheads will host the annual Mardi Gras Block Party with a Purpose Tuesday, March 5. This year’s theme is “Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood.” Free children’s mask making and crown making at 5:30 p.m. at High Cotton Arts. Bead making at 5:30 p.m. at ASU Center For Lifelong Learning. The 6:30 p.m. parade will include shopping-cart floats decorated by the Artheads, jazz bands and various groups. Spectators are asked to bring canned goods or beans to put in the shopping-cart floats. The items will be donated to the Limestone County Churches Involved food bank.

Combined campaign deadline
Friday, March 8, is the deadline for local voluntary charitable health and human care agencies or federations to apply for participation in the fall 2019 state combined campaign. The campaign is designed to allow state employees to give to recognized state or local charities. Parenting class
Kids & Kin will present a parenting class for caregivers for relatives titled “Emotional Abuse: The Effects on Children” from 10 a.m.-noon Wednesday, March 13, at The Haven, 810 N. Balancing classes
The Limestone County Council on Aging will host “A Matter of Balance,” a weekly (through May 6) balancing class for older adults at greater risk of falling, at 1 p.m. Monday, March 18, at Athens Senior Center. Spaghetti dinner fundraiser
The Limestone County Foster and Adoptive Parent Association will hold its annual spaghetti dinner fundraiser 4-9 p.m. Friday, March 22, at the Revival building at 301 W. Washington St., Athens. Plates include spaghetti, salad, garlic bread, dessert and drink. Cost: $10 for ages 11 and up; $5 for children 10 and under.

Headstart applications open
Community Action Partnership of North Alabama is now accepting applications for early Headstart, preschool Headstart, and state Pre-K Headstart for the 2019-20 school year. The Headstart programs are for children age 3, ages 3 and 4, and age 4. Parents must provide proof of birth, preferably a birth certificate; verification of 2018 income in the form of a W-2 form, check stub, Social Security statement, child support, unemployment, etc.; and Medicaid or insurance card, if available. Tax prep
RSVP offers free income-tax assistance for low-income, disabled or elderly taxpayers through April 15. Those who need assistance can visit First United Methodist Church Youth Center from 9 a.m.–4 p.m. Mondays and Thursdays in March and April. The center is at 203 N. Jefferson St., Athens. Nonperishable food drive
Lil Red Wagon Collections at 208 N. Houston St., Athens, is open 9 a.m.–7 p.m. the first week of each month to collect nonperishable food for local homeless people. Donated items will be given to Limestone County Churches Involved, which will distribute them.
Flex class

Spaghetti dinner
The Vietnam Veterans of America will host a spaghetti dinner the third Monday of each monththrough October. Dinner consists of spaghetti, cole slaw or salad, garlic bread, dessert and drink. People can either eat in or carry out. The cost of a plate is $8. Dinners will be served from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. and 5-7 p.m. at the VVA building at 17915 W. Elm St., Athens.
