Empty Bowls luncheon
The Athens-Limestone Empty Bowls Project luncheon will take place at 11:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 8, at the First Presbyterian Church Revival Building on Washington Street in Athens. Tickets for the luncheon are on sale now at the First Presbyterian Church office. Tickets are $15 each. One ticket gets you soup for lunch and a hand-made pottery bowl to remind you someone else’s bowl is empty. For more information, contact the church office at 256-232-0122.
Movie screening
RSVP, Athens State University and AARP Alabama will host a free screening of the film “Won’t You Be My Neighbor,” a documentary about Fred Rogers, his ideas and his determination to protect a child’s innocence. Movie screening
Athens State University will present a screening of the film “Green Book” at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9 at McCandless Hall. The movie is about an African-American pianist and his tour of the South in 1962. The film is rated PG-13. More information: 256-233-8189.

STEPS for young readers
The Limestone County NAACP is offering a free motivational reading program for students ages 3 to 13 at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, at Round Island Creek Mission Center, 13829 Lucas Ferry Road, Athens. The program, called STEPs, which stands for Students Taking Excellence Personally = Success, motivates students who may not enjoy reading. It also gives students who already enjoy reading an opportunity to showcase their enjoyment.

Storm spotters training
Athens State University will host a storm spotters training class from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 12, at McCandless Hall, 300 N. Beaty St., Athens. The class is free and open to the public. Those who attend will learn the basics of thunderstorm development, fundamentals of storm structure, identifying potential hazardous weather features, information to report, how to report information and basic severe weather safety. Athens State Black History Month
Athens State University will host two events Tuesday, Feb. 26, in honor of Black History Month. An art exhibit will open in the university’s library from 4:30-5:45 p.m. The exhibit will detail the African-American experience in north Alabama from Civil War through present day. The second event is a screening of the film “Cracking the Codes: The System of Racial Inequality” from 6-8 p.m. at McCandless Hall. A forum discussion will follow. Both events are free. Athens leaf collection
The final round of Athens leaf collection runs through March 1, weather permitting. If your garbage pickup is Tuesday, your leaf collection is Feb. 4-8; if garbage pickup is Wednesday, leaf collection is Feb. 11-15; if garbage pickup is Thursday, leaf collection is Feb. 18-22; if garbage pickup is Friday, leaf collection is Feb. 25-March 1. Leaves mixed with limbs won’t be collected. Do not block traffic lanes with leaves.

Athens State University Alumni Association is accepting nominations for alumni awards, including Distinguished Alumni, Outstanding Alumni Achievement, Alumni Loyalty, and more. Combined campaign deadline
March 8 is the deadline for local voluntary charitable health and human care agencies or federations to apply for participation in the fall 2019 state combined campaign. Tax prep
RSVP offers free income tax assistance for low-income, disabled or elderly taxpayers Feb. 2-April 15. Those who need assistance can visit the First United Methodist Church Youth Center from 9 a.m.– 4 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays or Thursdays in February and Mondays and Thursdays in March and April. Nonperishable food drive
Lil Red Wagon Collections at 208 N. Houston St., Athens, is open 9 a.m.–7 p.m. the first week of each month to collect nonperishable food donations for local homeless people. Donated items will be given to Limestone County Churches Involved, which will distribute them.
Spaghetti dinner
The Vietnam Veterans of America will host a spaghetti dinner the third Monday of every month through October. Dinner consists of spaghetti, cole slaw or salad, garlic bread, dessert and drink. People can either eat in or carry out. The cost of a plate is $8. Dinners will be served from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. and 5-7 p.m. at the VVA building, located at 17915 W. Elm St., Athens. • Limestone County Master Gardeners. The club’s monthly meeting will take place Monday, Feb. 11 at the Athens-Limestone Visitor Center. The social will take place at 5:30 p.m. with the program following at 6. The program will be on container-grown tomatoes and using the Boy Scouts as an LCMGA resource.
• Athens Friendship Quilters. The group will meet Monday, Feb. 11, with social time beginning at 9:30 a.m. and the meeting to follow at 10. The meeting will take place at the Rogers Center of First Presbyterian Church. Lynn Hales and Mary Harris will present the program on quilts of valor. Visitors are welcome.
