One woman died and another was injured after their vehicle left the roadway Sunday, traveled 12 feet down an embankment and into trees, said East Limestone Volunteer Fire Chief Joey Boyd.

Neither Boyd nor Limestone County Coroner Mike West were able to release the names of the victims at press time. Alabama State Troopers had not yet issued a press release on the wreck at noon Monday, which would identify the victims.

The accident occurred early Sunday morning on Copeland Road, between Turner Lane and the creek bridge. Boyd said there is a slight curve in the road there. East firefighters received the call at 6:40 a.m.

Boyd did say the driver was age 24 and the passenger 19. He said the driver was burned when the vehicle caught fire and she also suffered other injuries. He said both the driver and her passenger were out of the vehicle when East firefighters arrived, Boyd said.

The driver was flown by MedFlight helicopter to the burn center at the University of Alabama at Birmingham hospital, where she died Sunday night, Boyd and West said. The passenger was taken by ambulance to Athens-Limestone Hospital, he said.

East had about seven firefighters at the scene, Boyd said, adding that they extinguished the fire and treated the patients until an ambulance and MedFlight helicopter arrived.

An ambulance moved the burn victim from the wreck site to a helicopter landing zone, then she was taken by helicopter to the burn center at UAB, West said.
