Each year, the Athens-Limestone County Empty Bowls luncheon sets out to remind those who have that many in the community still have not.

Tickets are on sale now for this year’s luncheon, scheduled for 11:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 8, at the Revival Building in Athens. Proceeds will go to Limestone County Churches Involved and Full Tummy Project. For $15, ticketholders get a simple meal of soup, a handmade pottery bowl and the chance to participate in a silent auction to further support the cause.

“It’s a simple meal of soup, bread and water,” said Tere Richardson, executive director of Athens Main Street. “While the soups are extremely tasty and from some of our best restaurants, it’s still a simple meal meant to remind ourselves that there are still going hungry in our community.”

Richardson said about 15 restaurants, including Terranova’s, Applebees and Sweetest Things Tea Room, will donate soup in a variety of styles for the event. Local community pottery studio The Potter’s Hand began the project three years ago, and potters have contributed more than 300 pottery items to be given away.

Those items include the handmade pottery bowl, an “empty bowl” to signify the empty bowls found in real life throughout the Athens-Limestone community. Other items will be included in the silent auction with items from other artists.

Sponsors for the event include Clem Tire, First Presbyterian Church, T&C Stamping, Steelcase and Tripoint Solutions. Tickets can be purchased at First Presbyterian Church, at First United Methodist church or from any of the Athens-Limestone County Empty Bowl Luncheon committee members.
