The Athens City Council on Monday may approve the purchase of a light bulb sculpture as part of Alabama’s ongoing bicentennial celebration.

The sculpture is being designed by Micah Gregg, an Athens High School alum. In June, the city hopes to dedicate the sculpture, which will be installed near the Athens-Limestone Tourism Association building downtown.

The cost of the project is $10,000. City of Athens Grant Coordinator and Communications Specialist Holly Hollman said the cost would be split evenly between the Tennessee Valley Authority and Athens Utilities.

She said the purpose of the sculpture is to honor the history of Athens Utilities and the TVA. June marks 85 years of Athens receiving power from TVA.

A sign on the sculpture will read: “This sculpture commemorates the first office for Athens Light and Water Company, opened at the corner of Beaty and Market streets in 1906. The first street lights came in 1908. Athens Light provided electric power until midnight May 31, 1934. On June 1, 1934, Athens began to receive power from the Tennessee Valley Authority. TVA continues to provide power to Athens through Athens Utilities.”

The council will hold a work session at 4:30 p.m. Monday at City Hall, 200 W. Hobbs St., Athens. The regular meeting begins at 5:30.
