A man jailed in Limestone County on charges of capital murder and robbery is now accused of starting a fire in the county jail.

Trevor Davis Cantrell, 21, of 7900 Old Madison Pike, Madison, was charged with second-degree arson Dec. 27, 2018. He was in jail on the capital murder-robbery charge at the time of the incident.

Limestone County District Attorney Brian Jones said Monday Cantrell set fire to a dispenser inside his jail cell.

“The toilet, sink and paper towel holder are all one unit,” Jones said. “He (Cantrell) lit a tube of hair grease with a lighter. He was sitting on the toilet with the fire inside the holder.”

Jones’ office presented the case to the Limestone County grand jury and secured an indictment Dec. 6, court records show.

Circuit Judge Robert Baker set Cantrell’s bail at $5,000 on the arson charge, but Cantrell cannot be released on bail because the court has declined to set bail on the capital murder charge, records show.

Murder, robbery chargesĀ

Cantrell and Dacedric Deshun Ward are both charged with capital murder and first-degree robbery in connection with the Dec. 26, 2016, fatal shooting of Jason Ender West, 18, of Madison, at the Sonic restaurant on County Line Road in Madison-annexed Limestone County.

West had gone to Sonic to buy Xanax from Ward and Cantrell, according to court records. The two men intended to rob West, but Ward pulled a gun and shot West, who died a short time later at Huntsville Hospital, records show.

West graduated from James Clemens High School mid-year and was heading to college, his parents have said.
