Tanner takes dramatic victory

Jireh Jackson converted a 3-point play in the final seconds of regulation to force overtime Thursday evening, and Tanner eventually came out a 58-56 winner over St. John Paul II in the Brooks Christmas Invitational at Brooks High School in Killen.
The Rattlers trailed 51-48 with 7 seconds remaining when Jackson made a shot under the basket while being fouled. He converted the free throw to tie the game and send it into overtime. Jackson then hit a key 3-pointer in the overtime period to help Tanner build a lead, which they were able to hold on to.
Tanner advanced to Friday night’s semifinal in the tournament.
Tanner jumped out to a big lead against St. John Paul II, outscoring the Falcons 17-5 in the first quarter. However, SPJII spent the rest of the game cutting into the Rattlers’ lead. Tanner led 25-18 at halftime, and the game was tied at 39 after three quarters.
St. John Paul II looked as if it had completed the comeback with just a few seconds left, but Jackson made sure that would not be the case with is final-second shot.
Jackson led Tanner with 17 points, while J.J. Jones added 12 and Malik Atkins chipped in 10.
St. John Paul II was led by James Shores with 17 points.
Brooks 74, Clements 43
Brooks led 15-3 after one quarter and was never challenged by Clements in the first round of the Brooks Christmas Invitational.
Shane Starnes and Deontae Crenshaw led Clements with 12 points each, while J.T. Farrar added 10 points.
Brooks was led by Brett Urban, who scored a game-high 17 points.
Decatur Orthopedic Clinic Classic (girls)
Hartselle 52, Athens 49
Hartselle hit five critical free throws down the stretch to overcome a late deficit and take a three-point win over Athens Thursday.
Athens trailed 41-38 heading into the final quarter, but rallied to take a late two-point lead. However, Hartselle scored its final five points at the free throw line and held Athens scoreless in the final minute to take the victory.
Alaina Taylor led Athens with 16 points, with 13 of those coming in the first quarter. Moriah Taylor led Hartselle with 17 points.
Richland Christmas Classic (girls)
Elkmont 37, Fayetteville (Tennessee) 35
Elkmont got a close win over Fayetteville Thursday in the Richland Christmas Classic in Lynnville, Tennessee.
Emeril Hand scored 17 points for the Red Devils, who led 20-15 at halftime and held off Fayetteville in the second half. Haven Kirby chipped in 10 points for Elkmont, which advanced to play Richland in the tournament semifinals at 6 p.m. Friday.
Covenant Classic (girls)
Covenant Christian 55, Lindsay Lane 51
Audra Putman scored 21 points, but it wasn’t enough for Lindsay Lane Christian to overcome Covenant Christian in the first game of the Covenant Classic Thursday.
Kaleigh Madagan also scored 14 points for the Lions.
Olivia Ragan led Covenant Christian with a game-high 25 points, followed by Ashlee Gann with 15 points.
Keith Davis Memorial Christmas Tournament (girls)
West Limestone 55, Alexandria 30
West Limestone recovered from a loss to Loretto (Tenn.) in the first game of the Keith Davis Memorial Christmas Tournament Wednesday to post a dominating victory over Alexandria Thursday.
The Wildcats led 43-20 at halftime and expanded the lead to 55-25 after three quarters. The fourth quarter was played with a running clock.
Savannah McConnell led West Limestone with 19 points, while Caroline Bachus added 12 and Carlie Belle Winter scored 10.
West Limestone had fallen to Loretto 61-53 Wednesday. Bachus had led the Wildcats with 16 points, with Cassidy Winter scoring 15 and Carlie Belle Winter adding 11.
West Morgan Christmas Tournament (girls)
Lawrence County 58, Clements 44
Lawrence County pulled away in the fourth quarter to take a 14-point victory over Clements in the West Morgan Christmas Tournament Thursday.
LCHS led 14-13 after one quarter and 23-22 at halftime before expanding the lead to 38-34 after three quarters. Lawrence County then outscored Clements 20-10 in the fourth quarter to pull away.
Emrey McGill led Clements with a game-high 19 points, while Rilee Gilliam added eight for the Colts.
Lawrence County was led by Sadie Thompson with 18 points and Savannah Williams with 14.
