CHRISTMAS TRAVEL: Gas prices in Athens fall below $2, for now

If gasoline prices hold steady, the millions of people who will be driving during the Christmas holiday will be paying a lot less to do so.

Last week, AAA estimated more than one-third of Americans (112.5 million) would be driving, flying or taking a train during the holiday season. That number represents a 4.4-percent increase over last year.

“Strong economic growth fueled by robust consumer spending continues to drive strong demand for seasonal travel,” said Bryan Shilling, managing director of AAA Travel products and services. “With a record-breaking one-third of the country choosing to travel this holiday, roadways and airports are sure to be busy.”

Another factor could be related costs to travel. The national average price-per-gallon of regular unleaded gasoline Tuesday was $2.36. That’s 6 cents less than a week ago and 27 cents less than one month ago.

Oil prices turned lower Friday because of a weakened demand for oil and other fuels. Benchmark U.S. crude fell 2.6 percent to $51.20 a barrel in New York. Brent crude, used to price international oils, dropped 1.9 percent to settle at $60.28 a barrel in London.

The average price of regular unleaded gasoline Monday in Alabama was $2.03, though nearly every gas station in Athens was selling gas at less than $2. Prices ranged from $1.95 at Murphy USA at the Walmart Supercenter on U.S. 72 to $1.99 at the Citgo at the intersection of U.S. 72 and Audubon Lane.

Patrick DeHaan, head of petroleum analysis for GasBuddy, said fuel prices are at their lowest level since before Hurricane Harvey in 2017.

“Oil prices have been slow to react to a cut in oil production from OPEC, instead focusing on economic concerns and trade tensions with China,” he said. “Thus far, it seems that it ‘may take a village’ to help oil prices recover, help that would include robust demand from the U.S., which seems to be anything but the case. For now, prices will remain seasonally challenged, tied to the fact or expected fate of the economy moving forward.”

Those who choose to fly to Grandma’s house can find a number of deals through discount carriers or if travelers aren’t opposed to flying out of larger airports. Average air fares as of the second quarter of 2018 were about $350, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics. Fares out of Huntsville International Airport could be closer to $600, depending on the carrier.
