STOP SOLDIER SUICIDE: Benefit comedy show set for Sunday in Huntsville

A benefit comedy show to be held in Huntsville was organized by a Marine Corps veteran who wants to shed light on the issue of suicide among current and former service members.

According to the Department of Veterans Affairs, the suicide rate for veterans in 2016 was 26 per 100,000, which is 1.5 times higher than the rate for civilians. Crystalle Ramey, a Marine Corps veteran, set out to do something about the statistic.

“When I learned about the alarming statistic of daily suicide rates of my fellow servicemen and women, I was devastated, yet not totally surprised,” she said. “We have solid training to transition us into the military but no strategy to transition back to civilian life, and to say it is tough would be an understatement.”

She reached out to Stop Soldier Suicide, a national nonprofit group dedicated to reducing service member suicides, to see how she could help. The result is the 22-city Tour to Stop Solder Suicide, which will raise funds for the group and bring awareness about the issue.

The event is set for 7 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 11, at Standup Live Huntsville, 2012 Memorial Parkway SW, Huntsville. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. The show is for audiences 19 and older.

It will be the second stop of the tour. Comedians scheduled to perform include:

• Lauren Harris-Childers (U.S. Air Force) of Huntsville;

• Jim Seward (U.S. Air Force) of Nashville;

• Anthony Crawford (U.S. Air Force) of Denver; and

• Chris Alan (U.S. Air Force) of Rochester, New York.

Tickets are $20 for general admission seating. The event is sponsored by Xator Corporation and proceeds from ticket sales will be donated to Stop Soldier Suicide. Those who can’t attend but want to show their support can purchase tickets that will be donated to a service member or veteran. Donors will receive a specially designed dog tag as a token of appreciation for their support.
