East Limestone overcame an injury to one of its best players to survive a five-set marathon match with Southside-Gadsden Thursday night in the Class 5A North Super Regional tournament and advance to the state tournament.

The Indians breezed through the first two sets, winning 25-18 and 25-21. But setter Kiara Robinson suffered a knee injury after the second set and was unable to play the rest of the match.

She was replaced by Bailey Baker, but Southside capitalized on the loss of Robinson to win the next two sets 25-21 and 25-20. However, Baker and her Indians teammates came back strong in the tie-breaking fifth set, winning 15-6 to advance to the semifinals of the super regional.

The top four teams from both the north and south super regionals advance to the state tournament, meaning the Indians will be making the trip to Birmingham.

Robinson had 32 assists before she was injured, and Baker had 25 assists in her place. Anna Lucas had 22 kills and 17 digs, while Jenny Renfroe had 24 kills and 17 digs. Riley Carwile also had 25 digs in the victory.

East Limestone fell 3-1 to Arab in the regional semifinal Friday afternoon, dropping the first two sets 15-25 and 11-25 before coming back to win the third set 25-19. They lost the fourth set 22-25 to end the match.

The Indians were to play Madison Academy Friday night in the third-place game. It was a rematch of the Class 5A, Area 16 tournament final that East Limestone won 3-2. The game is for seeding purposes, as the fourth-place team from the North Super Regional will play the No. 1 team from the South Super Regional in the first round of the state tournament.

Athens Bible also advanced to the state tournament after easily winning both of its games in the Class 1A North Super Regional.

The Trojans defeated Oakwood Adventist Academy 3-0 in the first round before defeating Appalachian 3-0 in the quarterfinals.

ABS got its day off to an easy start with a 25-5, 25-6, 25-7 win over Oakwood. The Trojans didn’t have as easy a time with Appalachian, but they still managed to win in three sets — 25-17, 25-22 and 25-17.

Mackenzie Davis led Athens Bible with 46 assists and 22 kills in the two games, while Izzy Todd had 23 kills and Kyndal Barksdale added 15 kills. Katie Brackeen led the defense with 15 digs.

ABS will play Meek in the tournament semifinals at 10 a.m. Saturday. The championship and third-place games are set for 1 p.m.

Lindsay Lane Christian also advanced to the state tournament for the first time in school history, as it took 3-0 victories over R.A. Hubbard and Spring Garden.

The scores of the R.A. Hubbard game were 25-11, 25-9, 25-6, while the Lions defeated Spring Garden by scores of 25-18, 25-12 and 25-20.

Audra Putman led Lindsay Lane with 26 kills and five blocks in the two games, while Madelyn Dizon had 37 assists and 15 aces. Ava Whitmire had 19 digs to lead the defense.

Lindsay Lane will play Faith Christian in the tournament semifinal at 10 a.m. Saturday.

West Limestone was also in action Friday morning in the Class 4A North Super Regional. The Wildcats saw their season come to an end with a 3-0 first-round loss to Danville. West Limestone lost the first set 13-25 before losing the second set 12-25 and the third set 15-25.
