It has already been a historic year for the Lindsay Lane Christian volleyball team. But the Lions added a bit more history to their year Tuesday night when they won the Class 1A, Area 15 tournament to advance to the North Super Regional tournament for the first time ever.

“We are celebrating the first time we’ve ever made the regional,” coach Alex Dizon said. “That was one of their goals for the year: win the area tournament and make the regional.”

Lindsay Lane defeated Woodville 3-0 in the semifinal and defeated Oakwood Academy 3-0 in the championship match.

It improved the team’s record to 42-10, which is 20 more victories than the Lions had in any of their previous seasons.

“The girls are playing really well, and I think we’re peaking at the right time,” Dizon said. “They’ve been working hard since the summer, and they are seeing the results.”

A deep roster full of experienced players is the main reason for the team’s success, but redistricting also helped the Lions. Last season, Lindsay Lane was in the same area as Athens Bible and Decatur Heritage, two teams that made the final four of the state tournament.

Lindsay Lane had the potential to make it all the way to state but didn’t even get out of the area tournament after losing to Decatur Heritage in the semifinals.

This season, all three of those teams are in separate areas, and all three won their area tournaments to advance to the super regional.

“I think every single one of us remember that Decatur Heritage game in the area tournament last year,” senior Carina Whitmire said. “We used that as the fire to really try our hardest and get out of our area this year.”

The Lions had no trouble in the area tournament this season, as they overwhelmed their two opponents. LLCA defeated Woodville 25-10, 25-1, 25-8 before beating Oakwood Academy 25-10, 25-9, 25-12.

Bonnie Cundiff had four kills, while Madeline Dizon had six assists and Lindsey Holland had eight aces in the victory over Woodville.

MacKenzie Perkins led the team against Oakwood Academy with 12 kills, while Dizon had 33 assists and Cundiff had 15 digs.

Lindsay Lane will play Area 13 runner-up R.A. Hubbard in the first round of the North Super Regional tournament at 11:30 a.m. Friday. The tournament is taking place at the Von Braun Center in Huntsville.

“It’s really exciting,” Whitmire said. “We have a pretty small team and a small school, so to be able to say we made it to regionals is a big deal and looks really good for the school too.”

West Limestone also advanced to the Class 4A North Super Regional tournament. The Wildcats defeated Elkmont 3-1 in the semifinals of the Class 4A, Area 15 tournament to advance to the regional

They did fall to Brooks 3-0 in the championship game, but made the regional as the area runner-up.

West will play Danville at 9 a.m. Friday in the first game of the regional tournament.
