Elkmont hosts Wilson in region showdown

Elkmont has found some offense in the past two weeks, but now the Red Devils need to step up the defense in order to get a region win they desperately need in order to remain in playoff contention in Class 4A.

Elkmont (2-4 overall, 1-2 Class 4A, Region 8) hosts Wilson (2-4, 1-3) in a game that will all but eliminate the loser from playoff consideration.

The Red Devils have actually been credited with two wins in the last two weeks, with one of them coming on the field. Elkmont defeated Lexington 28-27 two weeks ago and then five days later found out they were awarded a forfeit victory over Deshler after the Tigers were discovered to have used an ineligible player in their game against the Red Devils earlier this season.

Elkmont then suffered a 51-20 loss to Central-Florence last week in a region contest, although the Red Devils did continue to perform better on offense, gaining nearly 200 yards of offense and putting up at least 20 points for the second consecutive week. It is the first time Elkmont has scored 20 or more points in two straight weeks since the 2015 season.

There is quite the battle for fourth place in Class 4A, Region 8 this season. The top three teams — Deshler, Brooks and Rogers, seem to have separated themselves from the pack, with the other four teams — Wilson, Central, West Limestone and Elkmont — fighting for that fourth playoff spot.

The Warriors sit 1-3 in region play, but they have already played the top three teams, losing all three games. They did defeat West Limestone 21-7 last week, and will clinch the fourth spot and a playoff berth if they defeat Elkmont tonight and then beat Central next week.

Quarterback Chris Silva leads Wilson’s offense, having tossed two touchdown passes last week in the Warriors’ win over West Limestone.

Elkmont is led by twin brothers Davis and Ben Hobbs. Davis completed all three of his pass attempts last week for 45 yards and a touchdown, while Ben Hobbs had a touchdown reception and a 50-yard touchdown run.

The Hobbs brothers also combined for 13 tackles in last week’s game and each had an interception.

Elkmont and Wilson have only met seven times on the field, with Wilson winning five of those games. The last time the two teams played was in 2015, when Wilson defeated Elkmont 55-0.
