A Limestone County man charged with reckless murder, assault/driving under the influence and DUI – alcohol was free on bond and awaiting trial on a charge of chemical endangerment of a minor when the crash occurred, records show.
Scotty Dale Moss, 38, of 16569 Zehner Road, Athens, was the driver of a GMC Envoy SUV that struck a 1984 Chevrolet El Camino Oct. 2 on Zehner Road. The driver of the El Camino, 37-year-old Lloyd Jason Crawford Reed, was killed in the crash. Reed’s female passenger was taken to Huntsville Hospital via MedFlight.
According to the complaint filed by the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, Moss was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash. A male passenger in his vehicle was not injured.
Records show Moss was out on bond and awaiting trial on a charge of chemical endangerment of a minor. A bond revocation order was issued Thursday.
According to court records, the infant child of a woman who shared a residence with Moss tested positive for cocaine. The woman’s elementary school-aged child, who also lived at the home, also tested positive for cocaine.
A warrant was issued June 30, 2017, for Moss’ arrest on the chemical endangerment charge. He was arrested July 10 and indicted Aug. 11. He was released on $5,000 bond two weeks after being indicted.
The initial complaint accuses Moss of exposing the woman’s elementary school-aged child to cocaine.
A plea docket and jury trial were scheduled for April then rescheduled for August. In August, the plea docket was rescheduled for Oct. 24 and jury trial rescheduled for Nov. 5.
When asked why Moss’ trial dates were repeatedly rescheduled, Limestone County District Attorney Brian C.T. Jones said there is a “short list” of 10 possible trials created ahead of each court docket. Court action for Moss had not been a part of those previous lists.
Jones said Moss had been working with the Department of Human Resources in an effort to regain custody of the children.
Moss has previously been charged with possession of marijuana and trafficking of marijuana. Records list his occupation as construction worker.
He remained Monday in the Limestone County Jail with a bond of $75,000. An initial hearing date on the latest charges has not been set.
