The Athens Ladies Civitan recently donated $400 to help special-needs teachers at Tanner High School, according to a press release.
In addition to the annual cash donation, members of the Athens Ladies Civitan help the students sell their handmade Christmas ornaments and sponsor a Valentine’s Day party and a Christmas party with Santa visit for the students. The Limestone County Junior Civitan Club also sponsors a student dance in May. A grandmother of one of the students recently told a club member how much her grandson looks forward to the dance each year.
About 32 children with physical and learning disabilities make up the three special-needs classes at Tanner. Other special-needs children who are on the autism spectrum are in classes at Johnson and East Limestone schools.
Athens Ladies Civitan member Trudy Romine, who has worked with special-needs children in Limestone County since about 1990, said there are no sweeter children. Although she retired in 2009, Romine recently returned to work in order to assist an 8-year-old sight-impaired student at Elkmont.
