Athens performs well at Kuzdu Hill Invitational

Athens High’s boys and girls cross country teams had good performances Saturday at the Cold Springs Kudzu Hills Invitational.

The Golden Eagles boys team placed fourth in a field of 18 in the Class 4A-7A race, while the Athens girls came in sixth in a field of 12 teams in the girls 4A-7A race. Both races were 5,000 meters.

Chase Irland was the top local finisher on the boys side, placing 13th in a field of 199 runners. His time was 17:46.72. Elijah Frankel had a top 25 finish, coming in 23rd with a time of 18:19.24. Other runners who scored for Athens were Guy Greenhaw, Joshua Simmons and Luis Diaz.

All five of the runners who scored points for the Golden Eagles broke the 20-minute mark.

West Limestone also competed in the boys race. Levi Jackson was the Wildcats’ top finisher, placing 66th in a time of 20:11.28. Ethan Navas, Sawyer Graham, Ashton Parmley and Brayson Owens also scored points for West Limestone.

In the girls 4A-7A race, Ella Romine was the top Athens finisher, placing 24th in a time of 23:20.13. Hannah Turner, Abbie Ogles, Ella Marlowe and Maddie Tibbetts also scored points for the Golden Eagles.

West Limestone didn’t have enough runners to compete as a team, but found success competing as individuals. Cassidy Winter placed fifth in a time of 21:22.97, while Avery Keenon was seventh in a time of 21:43.59 and Katie Serrato was 13th in a time of 22:09.67.

Clements competed in the girls 1A-3A race, placing 10th as a team. Darby Moore was the top Colts runner, finishing 32nd in a field of 103 runners. Abby Craig, Addison McFarland, Alexandra Estrada and Natalia Herndon also scored for Clements.
