Residents seeking another opportunity to learn about the candidates on the Nov. 6 general election ballot can do so this weekend at the community cookout hosted by the Limestone County NAACP and Athelstine Lodge No. 71.
From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, candidates on the local and state level will be available to meet with voters and potential voters at Lincoln-Bridgeforth Park in Athens. Diane Steele, political action chairwoman for the Limestone County NAACP, said the free, non-partisan event will be full of “plenty of good food, plenty of good fellowship and fun.”
“We’ve always made available to the community a way to meet and greet the candidates, because we think people need to make an informed decision about who they’re voting for,” Steele said.
There will also be an opportunity for those who aren’t registered to vote to do so. Steele said for some people, this year’s midterm election could be the most important.
“Let me put it like this,” she said. “Nov. 6 will probably be one of the most important elections in my lifetime. Depending on how old you are, it will probably be one of the most important elections.”
However, she said, the NAACP stresses the importance of voter registration, information, education and participation because every election is important.
“The ballot box is where we can have our voices heard,” Steele said.
