Volleyball: Athens Bible takes four wins in tournament

Athens Bible went 4-1 Saturday in the Donoho Classic, defeating Talladega, White Plains, Faith Academy and Spring Garden before falling to Faith again in the semifinals of the gold bracket.

The Trojans rolled through the pool play portion of the tournament. They defeated Talledega 2-0 (25-9, 25-11), White Plains 2-0 (25-12, 15-8), Faith Academy 2-1 (20-25, 25-18, 15-13) and Spring Garden 2-0 (25-19, 25-15).

Athens Bible’s rematch against Faith Academy was another close contest, but the Trojans fell this time in a three-set match, winning the first set 25-18 before losing the second set 25-27 and the third set tiebreaker 10-15.

Mackenzie Davis led the Trojans with 27 kills and 75 aces in the tournament, while Kyndal Barksdale had 28 kills and eight aces.

Izzy Todd had 23 kills, eight aces and five blocks, while Josie Duke and Alyssa Thomas combined for 31 kills. Katie Brackeen led the defense with 40 digs to go along with eight aces.

Athens wins three matches in Elkmont tourney

Athens High went 3-2 in the Elkmont tournament Saturday, defeating Tanner, West Limestone and Rogers, while falling to Westminster Christian and the host Red Devils.

Athens began their tournament by defeating Tanner 2-0, winning the first set 25-20 and the second set 25-13. Alora Thompson had 17 assists for the Golden Eagles, while Brooke Berzett, Mary-Greg Anderson, Gentry Wolfe and Jillian vickers combined for 18 kills.

The Golden Eagles then fell to Westminster Christian in two sets, dropping both sets by the score of 16-25. Thompson had 13 assists, while Berzett had six kills and six digs and Gracie Green had seven digs.

Athens defeated West Limestone 2-0, winning the sets by scores of 25-19 and 25-13. Berzett had 11 digs and five kills while Elizabeth Elmore had nine digs. Thompson had 13 assists.

The Golden Eagles next defeated Rogers 2-0, winning the sets 25-9 and 25-23. Berzett had 11 kills and eight digs, while Green had 17 digs and Elmore added 12 digs. Wolfe had seven kills for AHS.

Athens closed its tournament by falling in a close match to Elkmont. The Golden Eagles lost 2-0, falling by scores of 22-25 and 23-25. Berzett had 11 kills, while Thompson had 19 assists.
