ABS, AHS get volleyball victories

Athens Bible and Athens High School both participated in the Brewer volleyball tournament last weekend, with ABS advancing to the championship match and Athens High taking two victories.
ABS started pool play with a 2-1 (14-25, 25-20, 13-15) loss to Fairvew before defeating Austin 2-0 (25-15, 25-17) and Deshler 2-0 (25-15, 25-15) to close out pool play.
In tournament play, the Trojans defeated Athens High 2-0 (25-22, 25-19) to advance to the semifinals. ABS then defeated Muscle Shoals 2-0 (25-23, 27-25) to advance to the championship match, where they fell 2-0 (14-25, 17-25) to host Brewer.
For the tournament, Mackenzie Davis led the way with 73 assists and 29 kills, while Kyndal Barksdale had 40 kills and 10 aces.
Izzy Todd had 21 kills and 10 aces, while Josie Duke and Alyssa Thomas had 10 kills each. Katie Brackeen led the defense with 25 digs. ABS is now 6-2 on the season.
Athens Bible’s next match is Thursday at home against Decatur Heritage. The school is honoring all former volleyball players, as ABS is beginning its final season in its current gym.
Athens High splits four matches
Athens High lost its first two matches but came back to win its final two matches of pool play in the Brewer tournament. However, the Golden Eagles didn’t advance to tournament play.
Athens began the tournament with a 2-0 (22-25, 19-25) loss to Athens Bible. Brooke Berzett had 13 kills to lead the Eagles while Gracie Green had 12 assists. Elizabeth Elmore had eight digs.
Athens then fell to host team Brewer 2-0 (5-25, 15-25). Green had nine digs and seven assists to lead Athens, while Berzett had eight digs.
Athens then recovered to defeat Belgreen 2-1 (25-20, 24-26, 15-5), with Berzett leading the way with 11 kills, nine digs and five aces. Green had 22 assists while Gentry Wolfe had six kills and three digs. Elizabeth Elmore also had 18 digs to lead the Athens defense.
Athens closed out its tournament with a 2-0 (25-10, 26-24) victory over Elkmont. Green had 12 assists and seven digs, while Berzett, Wolfe and Jillian Vickers combined for 16 kills.
