From glass slippers to flowing capes and everything in between, it’s time once again to don your favorite costume and make your way to the Athens-Limestone Public Library’s Storybook Ball.

The one-of-a-kind event is 4-6 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 25, in the library, and kids of all ages are invited to participate in the music and merriment of this year’s ball.

“There will be dancing and musical instruments for the kids to play with,” said Debbie Joyner, library foundation development director. “We have a big foam pit kids can jump into. We’ve had a mini bounce-house that fits in the library in the past, and I hope we can bring that back, too.”

Anyone who participated in the library’s summer reading program gets one free ticket for themselves and one free ticket for an adult. Tickets for everyone else are available online at www.alcplfoundation.org or in the library at 603 S. Jefferson St., Athens.

Tickets are $20 per adult and $15 for children age 3 or older. Children under 3 attend free.

The theme for the ball is based on the theme of the summer reading program, Joyner said. Since this year’s theme was “Libraries Rock!”, Storybook Ball will be decorated to resemble a sock hop.

That is, a sock hop with a royal castle and carriage cutout for photo opportunities, Joyner said.

“We’ll have plenty of child-friendly food, lots of entertainment and lots of friendly things for them to do,” she said.

Dr. Magical Balloons will also make an appearance with “Dr. Magical Balloons’ Fun-Time Balloon Show.” The entertainer, also known as Dewayne Reynolds, provides a program of “edu-tainment” through balloon shenanigans, magic tricks and engaging comedy, according to his website.

Redstone Federal Credit Union will return as a presenting sponsor this year. Joyner said the ball is a way to celebrate kids who participated in this summer’s reading program while encouraging all kids to participate next year.

“It’s good for them to not lose their reading skills over the summer,” she said.
