Summer concert series

Athens-Limestone County Tourism Association and Jimmy Smith Buick-GMC are hosting “Singing on the Square” again this year. The free events are open to the public and will take place 6–8 p.m. at the Limestone County Courthouse, Marion Street side, on the following dates: Friday, Aug. 10, with the Athens State Community Band. Heroes run, pancake fundraiser

Alabama Veterans Museum and Archives will hold its 9/11 heroes run, pancake breakfast fundraiser 8-10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 11, at Alabama Veterans Museum and Archives at 100 Pryor St., Athens. Cost is $5 per person.

Meadows family reunion

Descendants of the Meadows family are invited to a reunion 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 11, at the Lion’s Club Kiddie Carnival in Athens. Please spread the word to all our relatives. Bring a covered dish and non-alcoholic drink. If possible, bring an item for the silent auction, which will be held to help pay for the reunion. Pet food drive

In memory of Sasha Dison, an annual pet food drive will be 2-4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 11, at Furniture Factory Bar and Grill, 614 Meridian St. N, No. 200, Huntsville. Come and enjoy great food, meet new people, make a craft. You may drop off pet food at Furniture Factory starting Wednesday, Aug. 8.

Public meeting

District 4 Limestone County Commissioner Ben Harrison will hold a public meeting 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 13, at the Good Springs Senior Center to discuss keeping the county roads open to Sugar Creek at the iron bridges in Lester.

Master gardeners workshop

Limestone County Master Gardeners Association will hold a free workshop on turfgrasses from 10-11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 18, at the Limestone County Extension office, Suite C, 1109 W. Market St., Athens.

Mitchell reunion

Descendants of John R. Mitchell and Caroline Phillips Mitchell are invited to the 41st family reunion at 10:45 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 18, at Killen Church of Christ Annex, 1560 U.S. 72, Killen. Supply drive/TV drawing

Vendors at the Limestone Flea Market will give away a 32-inch flat-screen television in a drawing to gather school supplies for needy students in Limestone County Schools. To enter the drawing, bring five school supplies or donate $5 at the flea market at 30030 U.S. 72 West, Madison, between 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays until Aug. 19.

After-school program

David’s Temple Missionary Baptist Church’s after-school program will resume from 3-5 p.m. Monday, Aug. 20, for students in grades K-12. Book drive

United Way of Athens-Limestone County will host Stuff A Bus 2018 book drive Aug. 20-Sept. 30 at 419 S. Marion St., Athens. Donations of used and new books will be given to students in Athens and Limestone County schools as reading incentives.

A few good yards

Limestone County Master Gardeners Association is searching for “a few good yards” to recognize. Yards must not be professionally maintained. Donnell House

The Donnell House will host special tours in honor of its placement in the Alabama PastPort, part of Alabama’s bicentennial celebration. The tours will take place 10 a.m.–noon Tuesdays and 2–4 p.m. Thursdays. Donations are appreciated. More information: 239-249-2211.

Kiddie Carnival

Athens Lions Club Kiddie Carnival will be open 6:30–9:30 p.m. every Thursday, Friday or Saturday night through Aug. 11 at 309 E. Forrest St., across from Athens Middle School. Rides for kids include ferris wheel, roller coaster, train, rocket ships, swings, carousel and more. A concession stand is also available with drinks, hamburgers, hot dogs, fries, chicken sandwiches, cotton candy, snow cones, funnel cakes and other.

Master Gardeners

Applications are now being accepted for the Limestone County Master Gardeners fall class. Class participants will learn to grow healthy landscapes or vegetable gardens, serve the community and become Certified Master Gardeners. Applications can be turned into the Limestone County Extension Office. Space is limited. The class costs $140 and will take place 5–8:30 p.m. Aug. 9–Nov. 8. SNAP signup

Retired Senior Volunteer Program is taking applications for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) for ages 60 and older. The SNAP program helps low-income people buy the food they need to stay healthy. Call 256-232-7207 or come by the RSVP office at 409 W. Pop tab drive charity

Tanner book-lending machine

Spaghetti dinner

Vietnam Veterans of America hosts an all-you-can-eat spaghetti meal from 11 a.m.–1 p.m. and 5–7 p.m. on the third Monday of each month, except November and December, at 17915 W. Elm St., Athens. Cost is $7 and includes spaghetti, cole slaw, garlic bread, dessert and drink. Eat-in and carryout available. Entertainment provided. Profits pay for scholarships for local students. American Veterans Post 21 hosts monthly country-fried steak dinner from 11 a.m.–1 p.m. and 5–7 p.m. on the third Thursday of each month at 22769 Black Road, Athens. Athens Friendship Quilters Guild.
