Athens High School quarterback Logan Smothers said he wanted to decide on his college choice before he began his senior season at Athens. He did just that Thursday night, when he announced via Twitter that he would be playing his college football at Nebraska.

Smothers will be part of the Cornhuskers’ 2020 signing class, and said coach Scott Frost told him he will be the only quarterback in that class.

Smothers visited the school with his father, Athens offensive coordinator Shane Smothers, earlier this year, but earlier this week, he took his entire family on the 13-hour car ride to Lincoln, Nebraska to tour the facilities and visit with the coaches again.

At that point, it was an easy decision to make.

“They want a quarterback with a lot of speed and who is very athletic, and they think I fit that perfect,” Smothers told the Omaha World-Herald. “I think I fit it because of our offense in Athens. We run a lot of similar stuff.”

Frost is renowned as an offensive coach, especially with quarterbacks. He was the offensive coordinator at Oregon, where his quarterback Marcus Mariota won the Heisman Trophy. Mariota is now the quarterback for the Tennessee Titans.

More recently, Frost was the head coach at Central Florida, where he led the Knights to an undefeated season, American Athletic Conference championship and Peach Bowl victory over Auburn in 2017. Frost was the quarterback the last time Nebraska won a national championship in 1997, and returned to his alma mater as head coach in January.

Nebraska is Smothers’ only scholarship offer from a Power Five school. The 6-foot-2, 180-pound quarterback also held offers from Troy, UAB, Austin Peay, Southern Miss, South Alabama and Tennessee Tech.

The Nebraska offer might seem out of place among the others, but Smothers seems to be a good fit in Frost’s offensive system, which features a quarterback who is dangerous both passing and running the football.

Smothers is certainly that, as he runs nearly 11-seconds flat in the 100-meter dash, and ran the 40-yard dash in 4.48 seconds at an Ohio State camp earlier this year.

“(Nebraska) is probably the best fit in the country for me, offensively wise,” Smothers said recently. “(Frost) told us that last year, with (Central Florida quarterback) McKenzie Milton, he could run, but he was smaller so he didn’t want to use him as much (in the running game). But with Mariota, he used him like that (running the football). There’s so much you can do with that offense, and I think I can do the same thing.”

Smothers passed for 2,041 yards and 14 touchdowns with 13 interceptions last season, while also rushing for 719 yards and eight touchdowns on 110 carries. Athens finished the season with a 5-6 record and made the state playoffs for the first time since 2013.
