A Huntsville energy company was one of nine chosen to receive more than $20 million in funding from the U.S. Department of Energy, the department announced this week.
Flibe Energy, located in Cummings Research Park on Madison Pike, will receive more than $2.1-million as part of the DOE’s Advanced Reactor Development Projects pathway. The money will fund cost-shared nuclear research and development research.
The specific project, which teams Flibe Energy with Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in Richland, Washington, will examine the use of nitrogen trifluoride as an agent to remove uranium from a molten-salt fuel mixture as a preliminary step for the removal of fission products.
According to a DOE official, these projects are important, because “they will help the U.S. continue to develop advanced reactors and technologies to support nuclear energy as a safe, zero-emissions baseload energy source.”
“DOE is investing in advanced nuclear technologies, because we are looking to the future,” said U.S. Secretary of Energy Rick Perry. “Nuclear energy is a critical part of our all-of-the-above energy strategy for the country, and early-stage research can help ensure it will continue to be a clean, reliable, and resilient source of electricity.”
