A pastor injured last month in a bucket truck accident wants parents to know the children who were on the scene were never in danger.

Shane Reyer, pastor at Mays Memorial Baptist Church in Toney, and District 1 Commissioner-elect Daryl Sammet were seriously injured June 24 when they fell from a height of 10–15 feet. The men were participating in a vacation Bible school activity when a cable securing the bucket to the boom of the truck snapped and slammed the men to the ground.

Reyer explained the men were not dropping eggs to children as reported in Thursday’s edition of The News Courier but instead dropping “homemade contraptions” designed to protect an egg if dropped from a distance. The News Courier was unable to speak to Reyer prior to publication of the previous article.

“We were dropping those from the bucket truck when that happened,” Reyer said. “There were no kids anywhere near the bucket truck. Everyone was off in the distance watching.”

He said he felt the need to set the record straight because some in the community have speculated children could have also been hurt in the accident.

Sammet sustained head and facial injuries will soon find out if he will need surgery. Reyer struck his head and shoulder in the fall.

“I’m feeling pretty good,” Reyer said Thursday. “I’ve had a good few days. … I’m slowly mending.”

He also added the accident could have been much worse.

“We are very blessed,” he said. “God was watching.”
