A pedestrian struck and killed by a vehicle Wednesday night near the intersection of U.S. 72 and Hine Street has been identified.
Limestone County Coroner Mike West said the victim was 54-year-old Robert Toney Jr. of Athens. West said Toney was crossing U.S. 72 on foot shortly before 9 p.m. when he was struck by a vehicle heading west.
Athens Police Chief Floyd Johnson previously said drivers braking to avoid the first wreck caused a multivehicle pileup near the scene of the fatality. No injuries were reported in the second crash.
At least three lanes of U.S. 72 were shut down for a few hours as officials worked the scene.
The Athens Police Department is investigating the cause of the fatality.
