Four young people were injured Wednesday night after a fireworks accident inside a moving vehicle.
Limestone County Schools Superintendent Dr. Tom Sisk confirmed two of those injured are Limestone County Schools students, while the other two are former students. He was told all the victims were in stable condition Thursday morning, but The News Courier has not yet verified the information.
Athens Police Chief Floyd Johnson said his department was notified about the incident at about 9:18 p.m. Wednesday. Athens officers were actively investigating a pedestrian fatality, which had occurred a short time earlier.
Athens Fire & Rescue Chief Bryan Thornton said the fireworks accident was initially called in as a car fire next to a house in the 2100 block of Stanford Street. The vehicle, with all four inside, ran through a yard and hit two other vehicles, Thornton said, resulting in burn injuries for the four and a total loss of the vehicle.
Limestone County Coroner and EMS Director Mike West said one person was taken to UAB Hospital from the scene, while three others were taken to Athens-Limestone Hospital. The other three were eventually taken to UAB Hospital via ambulance a short time later.
The victims were taken to UAB because it is one of only two regional burn centers, with Vanderbilt being the other option.
The Athens Police Department is investigating the incident. Johnson said investigators have not been able to talk to everyone involved and no further information can be released at this time.
