An 8-year-old boy was taken to Huntsville Hospital via MedFlight after he was found unresponsive and floating in a community swimming pool, an official said Wednesday evening.
Limestone County Sheriff’s Deputy and Spokesman Stephen Young said the boy was spotted by a “quick-thinking married couple” in the pool of the Legacy Grove subdivision. Limestone County E911 received the call at about 6 p.m.
Young said the boy was wearing a mask and snorkel when the couple first spotted him. The husband told his wife, an emergency room nurse, he believed the boy was playing “the dead man’s game,” or floating without moving.
“ … When the top of the snorkel went under, they knew something was wrong,” Young said.
The couple pulled the boy from the pool, while others on scene called 911. The nurse began CPR and continued the process until she was relieved by EMTs. The child had a pulse when he was taken to Huntsville Hospital, but his condition was unknown as of 9:30 p.m. Wednesday.
“It is critical that parents/caretakers pay attention to their children, especially in swimming areas,” Young said. “In today’s incident, it was alert and fast-acting bystanders who (hopefully) saved this child’s life.”
