An Elkmont man is out on bail after being arrested Monday for impersonating an officer.

Kaarl Edward Lewis Travelstead II, 23, of 25899 Watson Lane, is accused of knocking on the door of a residence in the middle of the night and telling the resident he was a deputy investigating a fight.

He was released from the Limestone County Jail after posting a $2,500 bond.

On June 29, Limestone County sheriff’s deputies responded to a call about a man impersonating an officer in the 21000 block of Johnson Road, said Limestone County Sheriff’s Deputy Stephen Young.

Young said Travelstead knocked on the door of the residence about 1:30 a.m. wearing a holstered handgun at his side and told the resident who answered he was with the Sheriff’s Office. Travelstead allegedly said he was investigating a fight that occurred earlier in the night. He asked to speak to a person of interest in the fight.

The resident asked for identification from the suspect, who handed over his driver’s license. The resident asked to see a badge, and Travelstead then said he is not a full-time deputy but a reserve deputy on duty assisting investigators. The resident, not believing the story, told Travelstead to get a uniformed deputy to the house. A few minutes after Travelstead made a phone call, a vehicle pulled into the driveway. Travelstead grabbed the driver’s license from the resident’s hand, retreated to the vehicle and left.

Investigators contacted Travelstead on July 2. He met them at the Sheriff’s Office and confessed to impersonating a law enforcement officer.
