Scoring conditions were quite a bit tougher at Canebrake Club Friday in the final round of the Alabama Women’s Stroke Play Championship, as the players had to dodge a rain shower which suspended the round for about an hour in the afternoon.
Athens’ Ally Williams finished up the tournament by shooting a 4-over par 76 to finish the three-round tournament at 8-over 224.
Huntsville’s Michaela Morard continued her domination of the event, shooting a 6-under 66 to finish the tournament at 21-under par, taking an 11-shot victory over Mychael O’Berry, of Hoover, who finished at 10-under.
Virginia Green, of Point Clear, finished in third place at 6-under par. Only seven players finished the tournament under par. Williams finished in 12th place out of the 37 competitors.
Williams’ final round began strongly with a birdie on the first hole, but a bogey on the second hole stifled any momentum. She then bogeyed the seventh, eighth and ninth hole to make the turn at 3-over par.
A birdie on the 10th hole was followed by bogeys on the 11th, 13th and 15th holes, but Williams finished strongly with a birdie on the 18th hole.
The tournament dodged raindrops both Thursday and Friday, as Thursday’s second round was delayed in the morning due to water pooling on the greens.
Friday’s final round was suspended just after noon due to a thunderstorm, but play resumed about an hour later under sunny skies, and the tournament was able to be played to its conclusion.
