A Madison physician who pleaded guilty in December to first-degree attempted sexual abuse is now working at a doctor’s office in Selma, according to published media reports.
The Selma Times-Journal reported Friday that Dr. James Daniel Cartwright is now employed by Taylor Internal Medicine. Cartwright was working at Cornerstone Pediatrics in Madison when he was indicted on three felony counts of sexual abuse in 2015.
Under a plea agreement reached with the Limestone County District Attorney’s Office, Cartwright pleaded guilty to the misdemeanor charge. A felony charge of first-degree sexual abuse was dropped. Cartwright was ordered to serve 12 months on unsupervised probation and to register as a convicted sex offender for life, records show.
Limestone County District Attorney Brian Jones said as part of Cartwright’s plea agreement, he had to register and comply with the Sex Offender Registration And Notification Act. Jones seemed surprised Cartwright would be working at a doctor’s office, considering he would be prohibited from being within 2,000 feet of any school, child-care facility or resident camp facility.
“He can’t work there or live there,” Jones said.
Jones said Cartwright’s pediatric certificate was pulled, but the state Board of Medical Examiners would be the authority determining whether Cartwright could keep his license.
Cartwright is listed in the state sex offender database as having a Prattville address. Prattville is about 35 miles east of Selma.
Selma Police Chief Spencer Collier told The Selma Times-Journal and investigation had been opened into the matter.
