The summer months can be a time of boredom for children who can’t find anything to do while school is out. But a trio of sports camps in Athens is one way for area youths to get outside and have some fun.
Softball camp
Athens High School will be hosting a softball camp from 9 a.m. to noon June 4-6 at the high school softball field. Cost is $75 per camper ($35 for second camper in the same family) and includes a camp T-shirt.
Camp instruction will be provided by Athens softball coach Thad Prater and Athens players and assistant coaches Whitney Jordan and Alaina Fitzgerald. Instruction will include fundamentals on footwork, catching, throwing, hitting, bunting, slapping, fielding and base running.
Sessions are available for pitchers and catchers. For more information or to register, visit bit.ly/AthensSoftballCamp2018 or contact Prater at thad.prater@acs-k12.org.
Baseball camp
A baseball camp will also be held in June 11-13 at the Athens Sportsplex, with Athens Parks and Recreation and the University of Alabama in Huntsville teaming up to offer a baseball camp for ages 6-12. Registration ends June 6. Cost is $120, or $100 for Athens youth baseball participants. For more information, call 256-233-8740.
Basketball camp
Later in the summer, Athens High School will host its annual basketball academy, instructed by Athens boys basketball coach Stace Tedford and girls basketball coach Eddie Murphree.
The camp will be 8:30 a.m. to noon July 23-26. It includes fundamentals and drills as well as fun games and competition. The goal for the camp is to make every camper a better basketball player and teammate.
Cost is $85 with a $5 discount for families registering multiple children. Each camper will receive a T-shirt, basketball and drink each day. Campers will need to wear basketball clothing and basketball shoes, but they do not need to bring a ball. Campers can also bring a water bottle with their name on it. Awards for improvement and skills will be given at the end of camp.
