Rain or shine, city pool to open Saturday

It’s shaping up to be a rainy Memorial Day weekend, but those who aren’t afraid of getting wet are welcome to visit the Athens City Pool at the Athens Sportsplex.

The pool officially opens for the summer Saturday, though it will be closed for the Memorial Day holiday. Admission is $4 and $3 for those 12 and under.

Parks and Recreation Department Director Ben Wiley said Thursday the water had warmed up nicely over the last several days because of the warmer temperatures.

“Everything is safe and clean and will be ready to go,” he said. “The water’s fine, so come out and enjoy it.”

In addition to single-day admission, passes can be purchased for $60. The pool can also be rented for parties at a cost of $100 per hour for two hours.

Weather concerns

With rain and thunderstorms approaching from a possible tropical depression, Wiley said he’ll be watching the weather. He said residents should consider doing the same.

He said at the first sign of bad weather, including lightning or thunder, everyone will be pulled out of the pool and will have to wait 30 minutes before they get back in. If the storms continue, pool staff will evaluate conditions and close the pool if necessary.

“It’s something we take very seriously,” he said.

Pool users who have to get out of the pool shortly after paying admission will receive a refund.

Lifeguards needed

There are four lifeguards on duty at the city pool at any given moment, but Wiley said more are needed for the summer. He said the pool will be fully staffed for the weekend, but as crowds grow over the summer, he’ll need five or six additional certified lifeguards.
