The city of Athens’ mosquito prevention efforts will begin Monday, officials announced recently.
Weather permitting, the street department will spray from 6–10 p.m. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.
Officials offered the following tips to reduce sources of water in yards, which contributes to breeding:
• Dispose of old buckets, cans, bottles, or jars;
• Repair leaky pipes and keep drains and gutters unclogged;
• To eliminate mosquito eggs, change water and scrub bird baths, as well as pet watering dishes;
• Properly discard of unused tires;
• Turn wheelbarrows, tubs, wading pools upside down;
• Keep weeds, vines and grass trimmed since mosquitoes use these shady areas;
• Fill tree holes with sand or mortar so that water does not collect in them.
Those who have questions can contact the city’s street department at 256-233-8747.
