Elkmont's Autumn Davis delivers a pitch to the plate against New Hope in the first game of the Class 3A North Regional tournament Friday afternoon. Davis allowed just one hit in the game as the Red Devils cruised to a 15-0 victory.

Elkmont wasted no time in showing its dominance and took care of business early, scoring 14 runs in the first two innings of an eventual 15-0 win over New Hope in the first game of the Class 3A North Regional softball tournament.

The win keeps Elkmont in the winner’s bracket, with the Red Devils scheduled to play Lauderdale County Friday night. Should Elkmont win, it would play in the tournament championship game at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, while a loss would put the Red Devils in a loser’s bracket game at 9 a.m. Saturday.

But there were no thoughts of losing on the minds of any Red Devils player or fan during Friday afternoon’s four-inning blowout.

Elkmont scored eight runs in the bottom of the first inning, with the big hit being a three-run home run by Haven Kirby. The Red Devils scored six more runs in the second inning, with Shelby Norman hitting a two-run double and Kirby following that up with a RBI double of her own. Hannah Usery completed the scoring in that inning with a RBI single.

After being held scoreless in the third inning, Elkmont ended the game in the fourth when Alli Griffis scored on a ground ball by Usery.

Elkmont banged out 16 hits in the game, while Red Devils pitcher Autumn Davis allowed just one hit and struck out four New Hope batters.

“It’s big to come in and put those runs on the board right off the bat and set the pace for the rest of the game,” Elkmont coach Mary Jane Hobbs said. “They went to the plate and were patient and found the pitch they could drive.”

Kirby finished the game with three hits and four RBIs, while Davis had three hits and drove in a run. Abby Gooch, Malena Butler, Griffis and Norman each had two hits for the Red Devils, while Gooch drove in two runs. Kayla Smith also added a hit and a RBI for Elkmont.

With another game later Friday, Hobbs said it was important for the team to finish its first game early and rest up for the remainder of the tournament.

“That’s good for my pitching, defense and hitters,” Hobbs said. “We didn’t have to stay out in the heat nearly as long as some other teams did.”
