ACCS names interim Calhoun Community College president

The Alabama Community College System board of trustees on Wednesday tapped Dr. Joe Burke as interim president at Calhoun community College.
Burke’s appointment comes as Calhoun President Dr. James Klauber prepares to leave for a new position in Maryland. Klauber’s last day at Calhoun is Friday.

“I’m a firm believer in the power of the community college and its ability to change the lives of those who attend,” Burke said. “It is a privilege to be able to serve students in this new capacity, and I look forward to working with my colleagues at Calhoun to continue the college’s commitment to success for every student.”
Community College System Chancellor Jimmy H. Baker described Burke as a “proven leader” who has devoted his career to improving the lives of community college students.
“… I’m confident his skill set fits the description of the leader Calhoun Community College needs at this time,” Baker said in a press release. “I’m confident the students, faculty, staff and administration in Decatur and Huntsville will be well-served by Dr. Burke’s experience.”
Burke’s tenure at Calhoun Community College will begin Monday, May 14. Information released by the ACCS did not indicate when a full-time president would be chosen.
Experience
Burke has more than 30 years of experience in higher education as an instructor, counselor and administrator. Most recently, he served as vice president and dean of instruction at Northeast Alabama Community College, a position he has held for 11 years.

He began his career at NACC in Rainsville as a counselor and psychology instructor. He went on to serve as director of admissions, chief student affairs officer and vice president and dean of instruction.
Burke earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Alabama and a Master of Science in Counseling from Jacksonville State University. He also earned a doctorate in counselor education from the University of Alabama.
