Several local athletes placed well in the state track and field meets which took place Saturday. The Class 1A-3A meet took place in Cullman, while the Class 4A-7A meet was at Gulf Shores.

While no area high school athletes took home individual state championships, several finished in the top six in their event.

The top local finisher in any event was Elkmont’s Chase Prater, who finished in the top three in both the 1,600 meter and 3,200-meter race. Prater finished in second place in the 3,200-meter race in a time of 9:54.47, five seconds behind state champion David Barrett of American Christian Academy.

He also placed third in the 1,600 meters in a time of 4:35.63, and was agonizingly close to a state championship, finishing just 1.5 seconds behind race winner Matisse Miller of Pleasant Valley.

West Limestone’s Cassidy Winter also took home a third-place finish in the Class 4A girls 800-meter race, finishing in a time of 2:23.05.

Athens High School’s Micah Boles-White took home fourth place in the Class 6A boys 100-meter dash, in a time of 10.78 seconds, while Athens’ Caden Shoulders was fifth in the discus with a toss of 143 feet.

Other fifth-place finishers included Lindsay Lane Christian’s Palmer Smith in the Class 1A boys 800 meters, while Athens Bible’s Nicolas Ulrich placed fifth in the 1,600 meters in Class 1A.

Tanner’s Zakobe Shoulders also took home fifth place in the Class 2A boys shot put event, with a heave of 43 feet, 9.5 inches.
