SoulStock: Christian music concert returns May 18, 19

- The head, neck and fretboard of two guitars capture the feel of a previous SoulStock.
Fans of contemporary Christian music will be able to see some of the top artists in the field this month as SoulStock returns to Decatur.
Billed as North Alabama’s largest outdoor Christian music celebration, SoulStock is set for May 18-19 at the Spirit of America Field in Point Mallard Park, Decatur. The event is free but a donation of $5 is requested at the gate.
The request for donations comes after the show showed a loss of $20,000 last year, a debt that still needs to be cleared. Phillip Presley, president of SoulStock, said the $5 donation is a great deal for a concert that would cost $45 anywhere else. Attendees are also asked to bring a pair of new or gently used shoes to the entrance gate to be donated to homeless and less fortunate people. The gate is on the west end of the fenced Spirit of America Field, closest to T.C. Almon Recreation Center. No coolers, spiked-end beach umbrellas or pets are allowed on the field.
Festival-goers are encouraged to bring picnic blankets and lawn chairs, and a variety of food vendors will be available to suit any taste bud.
“SoulStock features a night of worship and joyful music with local praise bands followed by a day of ongoing music by a distinguished lineup of Christian bands, including a hip-hop and rap artist, a modern worship and rock group, Grammy nominated recording artist and Dove-winning singer-songwriter,” said a press release about the event.
This year’s guest speaker is Tony Nolan, who will speak at 5 p.m. Saturday. Nolan is the founder of Georgia-based TNT Ministries. He spent several years as the tour-pastor and evangelist for the Casting Crowns Lifesong Tour and Winter Jam Tour Spectacular, stopping in more than 220 U.S. cities.
Nolan has written several books, including “Hurt Healer: Reaching Out to a Broken World” and “GASP! You Will Spend Forever Somewhere: How to Make Sure It’s Heaven.” He has also produced DVD and CD presentations, including “What’s the Deal With God,” “LifeLift” and “Spiritual 911.”
