‘Wall of Faces’ seeks Vietnam vet photos

The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund wants to make sure there is a photo for each veteran listed on the Vietnam memorial wall in Washington, D.C., and they need the public’s help to accomplish this task.
“Putting a face with a name changes the whole dynamic of the wall,” said Janna Hoehn, volunteer with “Wall of Faces” and the VVMF. “It keeps our fallen heroes’ memories alive.”
When Hoehn and her husband first visited Washington, D.C., eight years ago, she knew she wanted to visit the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, also known as The Wall. Even though she didn’t know anyone who had died in Vietnam, it was a war that had taken place while she was in high school.
Like many visitors, she decided to commemorate the visit with a rubbing, or a piece of paper placed over a veteran’s name and rubbed with a pencil, slate or other writing utensil to create an image of the name. Hoehn chose Gregory John Crossman.
“When I returned home, I decided to research Gregory and try to find his family, in the event they were never able to go to the wall,” Hoehn said in a press release. “… Off and on for six months, I researched every way possible and never found any family.”
It took the help of her own family, but she was finally able to find a college photo of Crossman. She submitted it to the VVMF after hearing about their request for photos in a local news story. Five days later, Hoehn said, she received a letter from Jan Scruggs, founder of VVMF.
“He thanked me for sending the photo,” she said. “It was the first for this hero.”
From there, Hoehn said she got really involved in the mission to find veteran photos. She started with her home of Maui County, Hawaii. From there, it was her childhood hometown in California, followed by Native American soldiers and soldiers in the state.
She has since had her story spread through 22 states, Alabama included. Thirteen of those states now have zero veterans listed on the memorial website without a photo.
“The response has been amazing,” she said. “I have collected over 6,000 photos since 2011.”
Unfortunately, Alabama is not on that list of 13, and Hoehn is requesting the public’s help in changing that fact.
“Even if you don’t have a photo but know which school any of these young men attended, it would be so helpful,” Hoehn said. “We need to obtain a photo of every single fallen hero whose name is etched on the wall, all 58,315 of them.”
She said the VVMF has managed to collect more than 53,000 photos total. They are displayed online at the Wall of Faces website, along with any background information or family comments that have been collected.
The VVMF is also in the process of raising money for an education center, an interactive learning facility that will feature the faces and stories of those who died in the Vietnam War.
Alabama was home to 1,210 of those faces. Of them, 216 are listed on the Wall of Faces website, www.vvmf.org/Wall-of-Faces/, without a photo.
Hoehn encouraged anyone with photos or additional information on any of the soldiers listed to submit their photos and stories to neverforgotten2014@gmail.com. She said those interested in volunteering to search local resources for information can also contact her at that email.
“If anyone is related, a friend or a classmate to any of the young men on the list, I would very much appreciate hearing from you,” she said.
