Smith, Clements take section title

Clements golfer Matt Smith won medalist honors Monday in the Class 3A, Section 4, boys golf tournament at Point Mallard in Decatur.
Smith shot a 74 over the 18-holes to win the individual honor, and helped lead the Colts to a team championship in the four-team tournament. The Colts advance to the sub-state tournament Monday at Silver Lakes in Glencoe. The top four teams in each sectional advance to sub-state.
The Clements girls team also advanced to the sub-state tournament, with the Colts finishing second to Mars Hill. Makayla Browning and Nicole Towe each shot 104 to lead Clements. The girls sub-state tournament is Tuesday at Silver Lakes.
It was a fitting end to a good month for the Clements golf teams. Both the boys and girls teams won the Limestone County golf tournament at Canebrake Club in Athens April 17, with Smith winning medalist honors for the fourth year in a row after shooting a 72. Abigail Baker won medalist honors in the girls tournament.
