Published 4:20 pm Tuesday, May 1, 2018
A two-run single by Mallory Jo Mitchell in the bottom of the first inning was all East Limestone needed, as pitcher Olivia Crouch shut down Athens in a 2-1 Indians victory Monday afternoon.
Crouch held the Golden Eagles to just four hits and a single run in getting the complete-game victory.
Both teams scored in the first inning, with Athens getting a run in the top of the first inning on a double by Olivia Patton before the Indians answered in the bottom of the first with Mitchell’s two-run single.
Neither team was able to push across a run the remainder of the game, as pitching dominated from the second through seventh innings.
East Limestone will host the Class 5A, Area 16 tournament, which begins Thursday. The Indians take on Brooks in their first game at 3 p.m.
Athens is the No. 2 seed in the Class 6A, Area 16 tournament, which is hosted by Hazel Green. The Golden Eagles face Florence at 4 p.m. Thursday in their first game.
Westminster Christian 2, Elkmont 1
Westminster Christian scored a run in the top of the seventh inning to take a victory over Elkmont Monday afternoon.
Westminster had jumped on top with a run in the top of the third inning before Elkmont answered in the bottom of the third when Shelby Norman scored on a groundout by Hannah Usery.
However, that would be all the runs the Red Devils would get, and Westminster was able to push one more across to take the win.
Haven Kirby led Elkmont with three hits, including a double, while Norman had two hits and Usery had the team’s only RBI.
Elkmont is the No. 2 seed in the Class 3A, Area 15 tournament, which is hosted by East Lawrence. The Red Devils will take on West Morgan at 4 p.m. Thursday in their first game.
Athens Bible wins area tourney
Athens Bible was victorious in the Class 1A, Area 15 tournament, which took place Monday at Decatur’s Wilson Morgan Park.
The Trojans began the tournament by defeating Whitesburg Christian 19-1 before getting past Decatur Heritage 11-10 in eight innings in the winner’s bracket game.
Athens Bible advanced straight to the championship game with the victory, while Decatur Heritage had to play Whitesburg Christian in an elimination game.
The rest benefitted Athens Bible, as the Trojans whipped Decatur Heritage 17-0 in the championship game to win the area title.
Both Athens Bible and Decatur Heritage advance to the North Regional tournament, which will take place in Huntsville on May 10.
