- West Limestone catcher Alec Baugher tags out a Randolph runner trying to score in the first game of the three-game series. The Wildcats lost the first game 4-0 but recovered to win the second game 12-4 and the third game 10-5 to advance to the second round of the Class 4A playoffs.
West Limestone’s bats were silent for the first four innings of Saturday’s Class 4A playoff elimination game, but they came alive just when it mattered the most.
West scored five runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to overturn a 3-0 deficit and take a 10-5 win over Randolph in the deciding third game of their first-round playoff series.
The two teams had split Friday’s doubleheader, with Randolph winning the first game 4-0 and West taking the second game 12-4.
Trailing 3-0 heading into the fifth, Braden Tuten got the scoring started for West with an RBI single, before Alec Baugher had the biggest hit of the game, a three-run double that gave the Wildcats a 4-3 lead. Drew Beddingfield followed with a double that scored Baugher, and suddenly West was in a winning position.
Randolph wouldn’t go away quietly, however, and answered with two runs in the top of the sixth inning to tie the score once again.
But West would not be denied and once again answered with five runs to take the series. Tuten started the sixth inning scoring by getting hit with a pitch with the bases loaded, before Dalton Simmons scored on a wild pitch. Levi McCormick then followed win an RBI single before Beddingfield put the game away with a two-run single.
Randolph put two runners on base with one out in the top of the seventh, but Gave McKelvey came in to record the final two outs and send the Wildcats to the second round.
Branson Owens and Dalton Baugher each finished with two hits, while Beddingfield had three hits. Alec Baugher was the winning pitcher, working the first six innings and allowing four earned runs on eight hits and seven strikeouts.
The third game was necessary after the two teams split Friday’s doubleheader. Randolph had an easy time with West Limestone in the first game, holding the Wildcats to six hits and no runs in a 4-0 win. Garrett Tennison pitched well for West but was the hard-luck loser after allowing just two earned runs and striking out five.
West Limestone came back strong in the second game, scoring five runs in the top of the second inning to take control, and led 10-0 before eventually winning 12-4.
Alec Baugher led the Wildcats with two hits, including a double, and three RBIs. McCormick, Beddingfield and Bayle Owens each had two hits. Jesse Rose also had a double and Dylan Simmons hit a triple.
Nick Townsend pitched a complete-game for West Limestone, allowing six hits and two earned runs with five strikeouts.
West Limestone (20-14) will host Sardis (14-14) in the second round of the playoffs. The first two games will take place at 5 and 7 p.m. Friday with an if-necessary third game set for noon Saturday.
